CHALLENGE 3

 April 13 - May 10  / 2015

On Monday morning April 13th the third challenge will appear in the wiki.

Until Sunday May 10th your group can add a creative contribution

on your school challenge page in the wiki.

During this period, all schools are partly closed for holidays; take your time for a good planning!

Also discuss in your group the similarities and differences in the contributions of the different groups.

The right to grow up safe.

"A child that is safe, feels all the space to dream about a future.

A child that feels unsafe, can only dream of safety."

Topic 1:

A. Have a conversation in your group about 'what does it take to make me feel safe?'.

  • What is the first image that comes to you when you think of 'safety'?
  • Where and when do you feel really safe?
  • And where and when you don't?

B. A conversation about safety raises all kinds of feelings and thoughts; a Pantoum is a beautiful way to express it.

A Pantoum is a verse, a poem of 20 lines, in which lines are repeated.

With this format, you can write your own poem in a short time, about how you feel at that moment or what actually appears before your eyes.

You don't have to create beautiful sentences and having a talent for rhyming is not necessary.

What matters is that you write the first thought that comes into mind, without correcting yourself. Make room for your feelings!

This is easiest if it is read to you by a classmate, to react as spontaneously as possible.

If you make a rap of this text, it will even be stronger... can you make a clip for your contribution in the wiki?

The schedule for the Pantoum is:

Line 1: I feel safe.

Line 2: I .... (describe where you are)

Line 3: I .... (describe what you see)

Line 4: describe how it feels in relation to the word 'safe'

Line 5: is equal to line 2

Line 6: is a feeling response to line 2: what does it do to you?

Line 7: is equal to line 4

Line 8: is your response to line 7

Line 9: is equal to line 6

Line 10: what do you experience?

Line 11: is equal to line 8

Line 12: how is that?

Line 13: is equal to line 10

Line 14: how does that feel?

Line 15: is equal to line 12

Line 16: what is your response?

Line 17: is equal to line 14

Line 18: is equal to line 3

Line 19: is equal to line 16

Line 20: is equal to line 1

Topic 2:

Every child has the right to be protected and feel safe.

This is not the case in every part of the world; in more than 30 countries children live in a war or deal with the consequences of a war.

A. Read this story and carefully discuss it with your group members:

The road

It is still early when Paola gets out of bed. She washes and dresses quickly.

When she is finished, she sees that the others are already there. Not only her two sisters and mother, but also the other children and women are sitting at the big table in the house where they now live.

Paola and her younger sister have to leave at 7:30 am, to go to school. They have to watch the roads very carefully, because of the landmines that can be anywhere.

The bang

Three years ago, the sisters lost their father in an accident with a landmine. They were all walking home, coming back from the market. Suddenly there was a big bang ... Paola remembers that there was an enormous cloud of dust. Her father did not survive the explosion.
The pain of their wounds is gone now, but the missing remains.

Home

Paola now lives in this house with women and children who all have had to cope with sad experiences and circumstances like this. They get help with their problems and questions. Through UNICEF they also get monthly financial support.

There are countries in which many people live in a civil war for years or where neighbouring countries are in conflict.

Different groups are fighting each other to obtain power and control the country.

Sometimes there are armed struggles and tensions are high.

Please take a look at this site:

B. Research

After looking at these websites, you'll continue to study the situation in one of the conflicted countries.

You can also divide the class into groups and choose several countries.

Explain the causes of the conflict in the places that you studied :

  • What was the reason for the conflict?

  • Which parties are involved?

  • What is the present situation?

  • What are the consequences for the children in that country or region?

Mention the sources you used (name, organisation, URL).

C. Write a letter

Write a letter to the governments or leaders of the involved parties in the conflict:

  • The letter is an invitation to participate in a peace conference.
  • Instructions:
    • Try to link it to article 27 of the UN Convention. (Or another article in which safety of children is the main subject).
    • What arguments could you write in the letter to convince all the parties to take part in the peace conference?
    • What do you want to make clear in behalf of the children of this country?

Discuss how you can present your research and letters in the wiki.

  • Try to post your contributions directly on the pages in the wiki, on your school pages.
  • (At some schools students cannot download files. If you upload a Word file you can also save it as a wiki-page)

Topic 3:

"The world is on fire,

but children didn’t light it"

Design and create:

  • Make a design for a large map of the world in 2D or for a 3D globe.
  • Be creative in using materials: think of packing materials, wire, fabric, foam, twigs etc.
  • With pins or flags you can indicate where on your world children can’t live in safety, caused by conflicts in their country.

Present your work with pictures, records or film to the other participants.

Additional questions and answers.

If during the challenge phase students come up with additional questions they would like to ask to their fellow students, we welcome them to post their questions.

Yet, remember that asking for "facts and figures" stimulates students to just Google the answer. Values, opinions, interviews, ranking their findings will stimulate students to think critically. Please take into consideration possible cultural differences and post questions that are 'open' and initiate research.

Please post questions (and answers) to your Learning Circle partners on this page
